Christmas Block of the Month- Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced- Class
at Sewing World Weatherford Tx on the last Wednesday of the month 10 am- noon
By Donna MJ Kinsey, KinseyQuilts.com
Have you ever wished for a special quilt…just for Christmas? Usually this feeling hits while pulling out the decorations, sometime after Thanksgiving. But the holidays are so frantic that there just isn’t time to think about a quilt project. Well, the easiest way to create a stress-free holiday quilt (for yourself or a gift) is to begin early and do a little bit each month. By Christmas next year, your family will be waiting for Santa whilst snuggling together under a wonderfully warm and very special quilt, crafted with love, just for them, by you.
I have designed this quilt for novice sewers, and will introduce different techniques each month. That way, you will not only finish the year with a beautiful quilt, but you will also have a variety of skills in your tool box that will build your confidence and encourage you to sew more projects. Snowball corners, fussy cuts, paper piecing, applique, decorative stitches, and embroidery are just a few of the skills highlighted in these blocks.
I am creating samples in 3 different colorways to inspire you. First, we have traditional Reds & Greens with White background. Because my husband is red/green colorblind, my home décor is primarily blue. Therefore, I am also making blocks in blues with white background. For those of you who have a home with “modern” clean lines and a natural color palette, I’m also experimenting with tans and greens on an ecru background.
For those of you who live far away from Weatherford, TX, you can take this class online with me. I’ll send you instructions with photos of what we are doing in class and happily answer your questions by phone or email. You must agree NOT to share the instructions or any class materials with those who have not paid for the class- please read and follow the copyright and limited license agreement.
Finished Quilt Size: Approximately 54” x 68”
I hope you like the first block. There are 11 more blocks to come. I can’t wait to see what you come up with! Please email pictures of your finished blocks and I will post them on my KinseyQuilts Facebook page. I look forward to sharing this new adventure with you.
Because this is a “scrap style” quilt, the background fabric needs to be the same (or very similar) throughout to provide unity in the quilt. You need a total of 3-1/3 yds of Background Fabric. I’m using White or Ecru. Black is also a possibility.
You can pick up the supply sheet for each block when you pay for your class. I will email it to online students.
A Word About Fabric Selection
The fabrics in the individual blocks will greatly vary depending upon your style, home décor, and personal taste. Because this is a “scrap style” quilt, this project lends itself well to using up small pieces in your fabric stash.
Prewashed-Pressed-Pre-Cut Kits are available- $10
Don’t have the time to rummage through your stash looking for fabrics that go together? Perhaps you are a new sewer and you don’t have a “stash” built up yet…No worries. You can purchase a prewashed, pressed, pre-cut & labelled kit for $10 ($9.36 + tax). This is a separate charge from your class fee. Kits in each colorway will be available for sale for each month. Kits will be assembled from my fabric stash, and may vary slightly from the sample, depending on how much fabric I have. All background fabrics will be the same.
